How IM3D PA12 powder is made

IM3D PA12 and TPU powders are produced in our own reactor line, polymerised, precipitated, classified and QC tested in-house. Not a repack of OEM powder.

How IM3D SLS powder is produced

From monomer to 10 kg box: polymerisation, precipitation, cyclone classification, sieving, QC and palletised packaging.

Production

We make the powder.

We don't repack it.

A common assumption about lower-cost SLS powder is that it's just OEM powder — Evonik, Arkema, etc. — bagged into smaller boxes. That's not what IM3D is. PA12 Balance, PA12 Performance, PA12 Glass Filled and TPU 88A are produced in a dedicated reactor line together with our long-standing production partner, classified and QC tested before being packed into 10 kg boxes.

The assumption

"Lower-cost SLS powder must just be repackaged Evonik or Arkema material with a different sticker on the box."

The reality

IM3D PA12 is polymerised, precipitated, classified and QC tested in a dedicated production line we run with our partner KINGS, from monomer to finished powder. The process is controlled end-to-end, which is exactly why the price can be lower.

The IM3D production line, step by step

Every batch follows the same five-stage process. Pictures below are from our production floor.

Precipitation in pressurised reactors

PA12 resin is dissolved and then precipitated under controlled temperature, pressure and solvent conditions inside our reactor line. This is the step that grows the round, free-flowing powder particles SLS printers need, and it's the reason IM3D powder isn't just repackaged OEM material.

Particle shaping & drying

Process parameters are tuned per material (PA12 Balance, Performance, Glass Filled, TPU 88A) to hit a narrow particle-size distribution, high bulk density and consistent sphericity, the things that decide how a powder actually prints.

Cyclone classification & sieving

Powder passes through cyclone classifiers and multi-stage sieves to remove oversized agglomerates and fines outside the 20–90 µm sweet spot for laser sintering.

QC, traceability & batch testing

Every batch is tested for particle size, MFR, bulk density and colour. Results are recorded against a batch number that ships on the label, so you can trace any box back to the run it came from.

10 kg packaging, palletised

Powder is filled into sealed liners, packed in 10 kg boxes, and palletised for EU/UK/US shipment. The same powder larger labs buy by the pallet, in a box size that fits your printer's refresh cycle.
